EVERY year stakeholders visit schools and institutions along the South Coast with their 60 Minutes For Drug Awareness show, an annual roadshow educates and entertains high-school children in KwaZulu-Natal.

The initiative is now in its fifth year and Brighton Hlatshwayo, the event co-ordinator says the aim of the roadshow is to educate and entertain KZN high-school pupils.

“This year the tour goes to Umzinto Prison, Mcothoyi Secondary, Crawford College, Reservoir Hills Secondary, Esizibeni Secondary and Kingsway High School,” he said.

Recovering Cedars Recovery Centre patients will be on the tour and will educate pupils about the dangers of drugs and alcohol and how difficult it is to “get clean”.

“The Cedars Recovery Centre has been, and continues to be valued partner on the tour because it is the recovering drug addicts who understand better the life of an addict and the treatment thereof,” he said.

On 14 March the tour starts at Umzinto Prison and Mcotoyi, 15 May at Crawford College and Reservoir Hills Secondary and on the last day of the tour, Esizibeni Secondary and Kingsway High School.

Hlatshwayo said celebrities who will an appearance at some of the venues include Rock Mbambo, comedian and scriptwriter, Nolwazi Magwaza, East Coast Radio presenter and Kgotso Dlamini and Londiwe Vilakazi, presenters of Twenty1 on 1KZN-TV.

“The involvement is of these celebrities is due to their understanding of the negative impact drugs have on youngsters and their dedication to prevent the growth of drug use,” he said.

There will be a rehearsal show on 12 March at Umkomaas Primary School Hall from 6pm to 7pm, and the public is invited to attend.

Entrance to the rehearsal show is R20 for adults and R10 for children.
