ON Friday 18 March schools will be closing for their school holidays. We are aware of this time and how difficult it can be on parents having to entertain or keep their children entertained during this time, but we urge parents to be cautious.

Our social standards have changed drastically compared to 10 years ago and it now seems acceptable for teens to go out and party, which is what normal teens do. Except these days their idea of having a party seems to be getting wasted - drinking and using other substances).

Whether we as parents, like to admit it or not, every teen goes through an experimental phase. The problem with this is that the stuff they experiment with is deadly, it can be one night of “fun” that ends up taking their lives forever, and you may not see your child ever again.

There have been a lot of recent reports of drinks being spiked at establishments, which can lead to serious consequences if your child’s drink is spiked. They can black out and end up places they have no idea of, they can be kidnapped and have terrible things done to them – this is reality. It’s no longer just in movies – this is real life and is happening right on our doorstep.

The latest trend seems to be the methylated spirits mixed with a tea bag and brown sugar to experience the ultimate feeling of being wasted. This is a serious concern as this mixture is literally a death wish as it kills from the inside.

There is so many concerns regarding teens and using illegal substances and alcohol, not only because they are starting down a path to addiction, but because while they are high absolutely anything can happen to them.

As parents, it is your duty to protect your child, so
please, these school holidays, be aware of where exactly your child is and who they are with. Make sure they are aware of what can happen to them and if something does happen what they should do - create a safety plan between you and your child.
Lastly, let your child be a child, don’t put him or her into an adult environment and expose them at a young age. - Bianca Holman.
