Alleged murder suspect arrested

THE suspect who allegedly killed Raymond Brian Collyer was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 23 February and linked to the murder.

“During an intelligence-driven operation conducted by Umlazi detectives and Brighton Beach task team in the early hours of Tuesday morning, a suspect was arrested and charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm,” Captain Charlene van der Spuy said.

“The suspect, Mthokozisi Mthoko Mabita, 25, was linked to carjacking’s in the Margate and Plessislaer areas, as well as the Amanzimtoti house robbery and alleged murder. These crimes all occurred in February­,” Van der Spuy said.

Collyer was fatally shot during a house robbery on Friday night, 19 February at 11pm.

“The victim was at his place of residence in Lewis Drive, Amanzimtoti having a get-together with family and friends. Collyer and his brother George­ were in the lounge watching television when he heard his wife screaming in the kitchen as four unknown black males entered the lounge armed with firearms and demanded car keys.

“A fight broke out between the victim­, his brother and the suspects after which a gunshot were fired.
“In trying to disarm one of the suspects, George was hit in the face by the suspect with the butt of the firearm after which the magazine fell out. He sustained bruises to his forehead,” she added.

“Raymond sustained a stab wound in his right leg and a gunshot wound on the right side of his chest and was declared deceased by the paramedic who attended the scene,” Van der Spuy said.

According to her, one of the family members managed to activate the panic alarm and the suspects fled the scene on foot, having jumped the fence.
The suspects managed to get away with watches, jewellery and cellphones.

“The suspects were wearing gloves. A description of the suspects could not be given as everything happened so quickly,” she said.
