AVOID being a victim of crime - the following advice can be useful:

• Most hijackings take place outside your house. People are often followed home from the shops, etc., and when they arrive in their driveway they get swooped upon.

• When leaving your home – be aware of what is going on outside your home. Cut vegetation back, add more lightning and install CCTV cameras.

• Be careful when drawing money – there have been a huge increase in people being followed from the bank and then robbed on the road.

• If you suspect you are followed – call the SAPS or your security service provider while driving to the nearest police station.

• Early warning protection devices go a long way to prevent unwanted guests. These can be linked to your alarm system to give you early warning of an intruder in the yard.

• Lighting – it makes a huge difference if you light up your yard. It gives you the element of surprise if you can see potential criminals before they see you.

• When out walking – rather walk in a group of people. Walking by yourself or even a couple of people, makes easy targets for would be criminals.

• Know your neighbour. In the event of an emergency – having neighbourly help at hand makes a difference.

• Neighbourhood watch groups are useful for being made aware when there is an incident in your area.

• There is a increase in theft of motor vehicles. Be aware of where you park. Install a vehicle tracking device. There are a large number of vehicles on our roads that are not fitted with tracking devices or have insurance. Get fitted, for as little as R99 a month.

• Be vigilant – be aware of your surroundings – at all times.

• For all emergencies, any resident is able to call ET Security at 0861 031 111
