ON Saturday, 27 May the Dutch Reformed Church – NG Suidkus hosted a birthday party for 120 children at Malvern Child and Youth Care Centre.

“It was decided at a meeting earlier this year to allow different church congregations the opportunity to host a birthday party for the children. Each month is allocated to a different congregation.

“They then get the opportunity to celebrate the birthdays of all the children for that specific month and all the children from the centre join in this celebration,” NG Suidkus volunteer Zelda Crous said.

The event started in the hall where Barney and friends joined in singing happy birthday.

A total of 20 birthdays were celebrated for the month, together with three members of the Suidkus congregation.

After the children blew out the candles, Barney entertained with some singing and dancing, with the children joining in the singing.

After the party in the hall the children, staff and the Suidkus congregation moved to the playground where a mini-carnival and boerewors rolls awaited them.

The feedback from the social workers and the child care workers on this birthday project is highly positive.

The children reportedly feel more loved and cherished and not forgotten.
