Compliance with festive fireworks guidelines improve

2016-01-13 06:00

FACT thanks everyone who complied with festive fireworks guidelines. The organisation reported the quietest run-up to New Year in many years.

“In certain areas like Warner’s the first reported bang was on 31 January at 6pm. That is a far cry from the public meeting called by Barbara Henstra some six years ago [attended by 100+ outrageous citizens], when our town was shot to bits before Christmas,” Lee Lewis reported.

“In the context of changing behaviour patterns it is never an easy road. It is a process that takes time, effort, lobbying and funding. This campaign has been carried forward by a few individuals in the same time frame and has resulted in a massive improvement in some areas, while other areas report differently,” she added.

According to the organisation, the target is the complete ban on fireworks.

“We believe there is purpose in achieving this feat. Nationally this movement is gaining momentum. Locally the year in and year out trend is massive complaints, no action, no involvement and then next year. … ad nauseam,” Lewis stated.

Fact called on people - the community - to get involved. “Get committed, together each achieves more. We need no complaints, but volunteers and funding,” Lewis said.
