MILNERTON’S Luca Filippi needed only 29 strokes to wrap up the last back nine of the Glacier Junior Series National Final as he claimed a three-stroke victory at San Lameer Country Club on Friday.

With rounds of 72, 75 and 70, Filippi was crowned the national champion and will be rewarded with an all-expenses paid trip to the Junior Orange Bowl in Florida, U.S. in December.

“It was tough out there. The wind was really strong so it was basically playing-for-par golf and just getting around the golf course with the right strategy. But I knew Keegan [McLachlan] was going to come in hard so I needed to make a few birdies,” said Filippi.

Last year’s winner, McLachlan from Silver Lakes Golf Club in Pretoria came within three strokes of back-to-back victories. He took an early lead in the tournament with a score of 68 in the first round, but then the South Coast wind derailed his momentum and he carded a six-over-par 78 in round two.

McLachlan managed to come back with a solid 74 in the final round to hold on for second place.

Third place was shared by Royal Durban Country Club’s Sebastian Terblanche and Kyalami Country Club’s Eric Wowor who both finished on 227.

“All of the players felt it was very difficult because of the South Coast weather. I think under the circumstances I played well. I had a few mistakes now and then but came through and I did really well,” said Terblanche.
