KZN Youth Run in Durban this week

2017-06-07 06:02

WITH only a few days to go before the Comrades Marathon, thousands of Kwa-
Zulu-Natal youth are ready to taste the Comrades experience when they participate in the KZN Youth Run in Durban on Saturday,June 3.
A strong field of close to 10 000 youth runners is expected to line up for the 5km and 10km races which will start at King’s Park Athletic Stadium and finish at the adjacent rugby outer fields at 8am.

The Youth Run is held annually on the eve of the Comrades Marathon and is part of the programme to unearth talent which is funded by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport and Recreation in partnership with KwaZulu-Natal Athletics.

Scores of Comrades Marathon runners also use the race as a warm-up exercise before taking on the 80-plus kilometres between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi, said the youth run provides a good platform for youth to showcase their talent.

“The youth run has over the years grown to become one of the most prominent events on our youth development calendar. The aim is to expose the youth, especially those from township and rural areas, to the experience and feel of the Comrades Marathon so they are encouraged to take up athletics as their sport of choice,” said Sithole-Moloi.

Bulk entries, which were accepted mainly through the schools, have been closed and only individual entries are being received online through the KwaZulu-Natal Athletics website. Late entries will also be accepted at the Comrades Expo up to Friday, June 2.

Top 10 winners in the 14-19 age group, boys and girls categories, will receive prize money of between R100 and R1 000 and medals. Schools that produce the highest number of finishers will share the R15 000 prize money, with the top school getting R5 000. - Supplied.
