Let us take the goodwill further

2016-02-10 06:00

SOUTH Africans are a very caring people. In recent weeks, millions of litres of bottled water have been donated to fellow citizens and livestock affected by the drought.

Then there was a child of the street who, aside from being a breadwinner, cared for an abandoned monkey infant. A good Samaritan came to the party and fulfilled the youngster’s dream of flying an aeroplane.

Life-saving surgery is often performed free by many dedicated specialists.

Community work takes me to rural areas where ubuntu is thriving. Child-headed households and communities are supporting orphans.

SAPS personnel do excellent work in their sectors. Religious and faith-based organisations take care of the less fortunate in their communities. Churches and Rotary clubs provide meals on an ongoing basis to patients at hospitals and clinics.

Let us take this goodwill and humanity a step further - schools must teach that racism is repulsive, teachers should undergo training programmes to inculcate human values in education and tolerance must be the nucleus of all our actions. Homes, churches and youth structures all have serious business to attend to.

We live in a diverse South Africa that belongs to all. Let us celebrate our diversity, not forgetting, but building on the mistakes of the past. Significantly, we need only to speak when what we have to say is sweeter than silence and think many times before hitting the “send” and “post” button.
