2017-03-22 06:03

SAPS EThekwini Outer Cluster Task Team conducted an intelligence driven operation, searching for a wanted suspect who shot and seriously wounded Umbumbulu police officer, 27-year-old Constable Nduduzo Mdunge.

On March 10 at 10.30pm, police were conducting an operation at Tshehlophe area, Umbumbulu to eliminate the proliferation of illegal firearms and other criminal activities.

During the operation, police entered a house, where a male suspect fired at the police, injuring Mdunge on the arm and chest. Police returned fire and the suspect fled into the bushes leaving his AK47 rifle and a handgun. A case of attempted murder was opened at Umbumbulu police station.

The man was traced and tracked to a hospital in Scottburgh where he was admitted with a gunshot wound to the leg. The 40-year-old suspect was immediately arrested and remains in hospital under police guard. The suspect will be charged for attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms. He will appear in the Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court soon.

KwaZulu-Natal’s acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, applauded police on their persistence to arrest the suspect.

“We will not tolerate criminals who shoot at police officers while conducting their duties, protecting the citizens of this country. We will ensure that he faces the full might of the law,” he said.
