Moyane must follow Gordhan’s instructions

2016-03-09 06:00

INSTRUCTIONS from the head of the institution must be adhered to religiously, as protocol dictates.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan gave a clear instruction to the SA Revenue Service commissioner, Tom Moyane, to stop his restructuring drive which began after his appointment, but Moyane defied this instruction.

Kindergarten economics explicitly points out that if authority is not respected, then businesses and institutions will crumble. Tampering with the Finance ministry with the intention to cause instability in the markets is tantamount to tampering with the lives of all South Africans.

Gordhan was also targeted by the Hawks. Could there be a conspiracy against the minister? It is a difficult question to answer, although the president says the conspiracy theory is gossip and rumours.

Gordhan may have ruffled a few feathers with certain directives in his Budget speech, especially with regard to the amalgamation at SAA.

The public spat between the minister and the commissioner needs to be reined in urgently. These are practically the two most important public servants who control the purse strings of the country. Markets react to the slightest inclination of instability within a country. Another devaluation of the rand because of impulsive actions and decisions will send a message to the people that the government does not care about their welfare. Such a situation must be avoided at all costs.
