Opposition not serving the people

2016-04-06 06:00

DO not tell me you are a better option than the ANC. Do not tell the people of South Africa to vote for you because you will change it for the better. Do not tell me you care for the poor and unemployed of this country, because you are lying.

The reason why South Africa is in this economic, social and moral crisis is because most of our public representatives (opposition included) are part of the problem. Yes, I am angry, I am very angry, but more saddened by the fact that while we put our trust in these people to represent us they do not, they just take care of their own personal survival.

All four of the biggest opposition parties in Parliament opposed President Jacob Zuma’s salary increase and put up a big fight in Parliament last week, but how many of them opposed their five- percent increase.

You all (opposition parties) voted against Zuma’s increase of approximately R120 000, but how many South Africans know of the five percent increase you all got? The five percent increase for all MPs equals about R18,6 million - that is excluding MPLs, city councillors and mayors, and if you are a chairperson of a committee, you get even more.

Do you really work for the people? How can we rebuild Mzansi if you do not represent the people?

Your salary increase in total is about 155 times more than Zuma’s increase. Have public representatives thought about what they can do with their increase?

If just the opposition used their increase to help SA, it would amount to more than R7 million. The exact people who gave you your job.

It is so easy to show how many jobs, school, RDP houses, etc., can be created or built with Zuma’s salary or the Nkandla costs, but what about you, the opposition?

Are you truly there for the people of South Africa or just there to tell us how bad the ANC is. If you really want to work for the people, you will take your salary increase and put it back into the community you serve.

When you chose to become a public representative, you did it because you wanted to serve the people of South Africa, not for the money. If you did it for the money then your heart is in the wrong place. I will end with this - batho pele — people first.
