Police officer charged with murder

THREE men, accused of multiple crimes in the Imfume area, were picked up at their homes by residents on Sunday 6 November.

According to Amanzimtoti SAPS spokesperson Charlene van der Spuy: “They tied [the suspects] to poles and assaulted them by hitting them with sjamboks after which they poured petrol over them and set them alight.

“After putting out the flames they were released. One of them took shelter in a public toilet of the sports ground where he succumbed to his injuries. The other two are in hospital in a critical condition.”

A case of murder is being investigated by Amanzimtoti SAPS detectives.

After following up on information received, a policeman was identified as being among the crowd who assaulted the alleged criminals.

“Thabiso Mqadi from Isipingo SAPS, was arrested and charged with murder, kidnapping and two counts of attempted murder,” said Van der Spuy.

He appeared in Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and was released on R2 000 bail.

The case was postponed for further investigation.

In a separate incident a man was arrested for murder on 14 November in Illovo.

Van der Spuy said the deceased, Siboniso Shaka Mzulwini (22), was walking home from an Illovo tavern with his brother when they stopped to speak to girls sitting on the pavement.

“While talking to one of the girls, the suspect, Thembinkosi Mbanjwa, (20), and his friend arrived and an argument started. The suspect drew a knife and his friend tried to intervene by pulling the suspect away.

“The suspect, however, became more aggressive, broke loose, stabbed Mzulwini in the stomach and fled the scene.”

Mzulwini had apparently run towards his brother holding his stomach as his intestines were visible. His brother helped him home, where he died.

A case of murder was opened and investigated by Amanzimtoti Detectives.

“Later the same morning Captain Sakhiwe Bhulose of Amanzimtoti Detectives traced and arrested the suspect, who was positively identified by Mzulwini’s brother,” said Van der Spuy.

The suspect was charged with murder, appeared in Umbumbulu Court and remains in custody.
