Policeman sentenced for drunk driving

2017-06-28 06:00

TWO members of Amanzimtoti SAPS arrested a KwaMatkhuta policeman for driving a police vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

Effecting the arrest was unsung heroes, Sergeant Greg Lander-Ritchie and Constable Judy Mbokazi.

“We saw the driver of the vehicle was driving erratically. We approached him and indicated that he should pull over. A short car chase ensued and we ended up putting him in the back of his own police vehicle.

“The way I look at it is, if he wears a uniform it reflects on me. Many people have the perception that we are corrupt. It would be nice if we can change that perception,” Sergeant Lander-Ritchie said.

Eric Jabulani Mnyandu pleaded guilty on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor on 31 January, 2015. A blood test proved he was well over the legal limit.

Magistrate Charlotte Dickinson sentenced Mnyandu to a R5 000 fine or serve one year imprisonment. In her ruling, Magistrate Dickinson said if the accused did not plead guilty, she would have imposed direct imprisonment.
