POLITICAL unrest that started in Folweni (Ward 95) three weeks ago, spread to neighbouring Umbumbulu (Ward 100) and Bhekulwandle (Ward 67) along the R603 on Monday, 14 March.

Roads barricaded with burning tyres, broken glass, steel barriers, tree stumps and rocks against the background of small arms fire between houses reminded of scenes that played out during the eighties, as opposed to a country almost a quarter century into democracy.

Neighbouring Amanzimtoti Ward 97 DA Councillor André Beetge confirmed the protest actions tie in with the recent burning of Ward 95 ANC Councillor Shange's office, adjacent municipal building and municipal equipment valued at several million rand in the Folweni area.

"Further to which groups in political attire forced IEC officials to close voting stations in Ward 95 during the first registration weekend, thus depriving residents the opportunity to register and exercise their democratic right to vote on bread and butter issues," said Beetge.

Rumour has it that residents are extremely unhappy at the ANC's Ward 95 local government election (LGE) candidate - this amid the deep divide within the governing party structures vested in a power struggle between eThekwini mayor Cllr James Nxumalo and regional ANC chairperson Cllr Zandile Gumede who will undoubtedly become the next mayor, should the ANC triumph the elections.

The situation prevails amid preparations for a mid-March by-election in Ward 67 following the death of ANC councillor, Hendrik Cele in December 2015.
