Robber and rapist convicted

A HOUSE robber and rapist will serve a total of 28 years in prison, having been positively linked to a crime via DNA.

“During February 2013 around 8pm, the female victim (22) was alone at home with her two year old baby watching television when three African males entered the lounge.

“Two were armed with knives and one with a stick with which they threatened and demanded money and a firearm from her,” said Captain Charlene van der Spuy.

“When she responded that she had neither, they tied her hands and feet with strips of material and placed her on the bed. Two of the suspects brutally raped her, whilst the third suspect searched the house for any valuables. They then took a DVD player and fled the scene on foot,” she said.

According to van der Spuy, a case of house robbery and rape was opened and investigated. One of the accused, Sipho Nhlaka Hlophe (31), was later arrested and positively linked to the crime via DNA.

The accused appeared in Umlazi Regional Court on 6 May, where he was convicted as follows: Count 1: house robbery with intent - 3 years imprisonment, Count 2: rape - 10 years imprisonment and Count 3: Robbery Aggravated - 15 years imprisonment.

“The accused will serve a total of 28 years imprisonment. The Management of Amanzimtoti SAPS applauds Detective W/O KD Zungu who secured this successful conviction,” van der Spuy said.
