Robbery suspects sentenced

2017-01-11 06:01

TWO suspects, Lwazi Dlamini and Nhlakanipho Knowledge Gumede (both aged 20), were charged with common robbery after being found guilty in the Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court where bail was denied and they remained in custody until 19 December, 2016 when they were sentenced to serve three years’ each.

“On 28 June, 2016, at 11am, a victim was crossing Umdoni Road bridge when he was approached by two unknown black males, who asked him for a light. As he did not respond to their request, they blocked his way, pushed him and pulled on his clothes,” SAPS PRO Captain Charlene van der Spuy said.

A struggled reportedly occurred between the victim and one of the suspects, which resulted in them rolling down the embankment.

“The suspects took the victim’s cell phone, a Samsung valued at R4 500, and ran into the nearby bushes. The victim went back to the top of the road and asked the help of a driver of a breakdown vehicle that was parked on the top, to contact 10111,” Captain Van der Spuy said.

An armed response unit and members of the Metro K9 was quickly in attendance. The victim gave them a description of the suspects and within a short while the suspects were apprehended and positively identified by the victim. His cell phone was also found in their possession.

The suspects were also declared unfit to possess firearms.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Blessing Ngcobo secured the conviction.
