AMANZIMTOTI Hockey Club is fast making a name for itself with five women being selected for the KZN Country Districts Hockey Women’s A-team.

This is an even more significant achievement if one takes into consideration that a team consists of 15 members, which translates into a third of the women’s team being from Toti.

Initially, Toti Hockey Club and Port Shepstone had a trial to make two combined teams.

From there the two teams competed at the Quadrangular Country Districts Hockey Tournament. The competition was tough, but both teams did exceptionally well, considering they hadn’t practiced together before, which led them to be selected for the KwaZulu-Natal team.

Team members include Eirean Bowker, Jessica and her sister, Kirsty Wiggill, Jolani Scholtz and Celeste Denton.

Kirsty Wiggill was selected vice-captain for the team and Jessica Wiggill was awarded the trophy for Player of the Tournament.

Keeping the upper South Coast in the loop, Ruben Myburgh, a former Toti High pupil, now playing for Port Shepstone and teammate Lionel Wentzel were chosen for the men’s A team.

The women will compete in the SA Country District Tournament from July 9 to 16 in Paarl and the men will compete in Rustenberg. The team is hoping to obtain sponsorships for the tournament.

The Crazy Cake Lady, Caroline Bowker set the ball rolling by baking and selling 700 cupcakes online via her Facebook page.

She was assisted by Alta Jansen van Vuuren, who will be baking and donating 220 of them.

Bowker has also started a raffle to raise funds and the winner will receive a R5 000 bathroom make-over from Paus Plumbers - terms and conditions apply.

There are also other great prizes to be won - a R500 pamper hamper from Good Stuff, booze hamper, sweetie hamper, R500 hair make over from the Hairy Fairy, R500 jewellery voucher from Mowana design, R1 050 photo shoot from Jade Sorenson, R500 cake voucher from the Crazy Cake Lady and R1 000 birthday party voucher from Funky Frogs.

Costs for the hockey players are R5 990, which includes transport, travel and a basic sports kit, with their deposits due on June 20.

Team members are also hoping to obtain sponsorship of other kit items such as warm-up vests, hoodies, peak caps and sport towels and are asking companies and individuals to assist.

For further information, contact Bowker on 084 213 6433 or Denton on 072 127 1346.
