A CASE of attempted robbery and murder is being investigated by Amanzimtoti detectives following an attack on a woman in St Winifreds, and the suspect being shot.

“It is alleged that on Monday, 6 February at 1.30pm the victim, a female, was waiting for a lift on the side of the road in Long Acres Drive in St Winifreds, with her earphones plugged in.
She was approached by three unknown men who surrounded her and one produced a knife. They demanded she hand over her cell phone and when she refused they threatened to kill her,” SAPS PRO Captain Charlene van der Spuy said.

“Municipal workers, who were busy across the road, became suspicious of their actions and it became apparent they were attempting to rob the victim. The workers reacted by shouting at the suspects who then started running. The workers gave chase and caught one suspect.” According to her, the suspect told the workers that he was trying to help her, not rob her.

“The workers told the suspect that if he was telling the truth he must wait for the police. While waiting the suspect tried to flee, but was caught by one of the workers. The suspect then pulled out a knife and tried to stab the worker,” said Captain van der Spuy.

“The municipal worker, who was under attack, drew his firearm and shots were fired. The suspect sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to the injuries,” she said. - Supplied.
