Time to stop judging

2016-01-13 06:00

IT is extremely distressing to watch the current dialogue about racial slurs in our media. Some people have made statements which have been simply foolish. Some responses have had undoubted political agendas.

But no commentators have pointed out that we South Africans were separated so effectively by apartheid for so long, that we currently live in a state of perpetual low grade culture shock.

The result is that we easily misinterpret things written and said by people of other cultures. And our national levels of frustration are so high, that our responses are too often excessive.

It’s time for caution in our inter-racial relationships and to listen to biblical wisdom: “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye and not notice the log that is in your own eye?”
