AS you round the last bend of the last stretch of road leading to the Cavern Berg Resort, which is situated adjacent to the Royal Natal National park and Amphitheatre, in the beautiful Northern Drakensberg, you are afforded a view of ‘Sugar Loaf’ and the ‘Pimple’ – a skyline synonymous with this ‘resort of many happy returns’.

Not only does the Cavern Berg Resort, named after the famous “Cannibal Cavern” on its property, share a border with a World Heritage Site - it has also been classified a “Site of Conservation Significance” in South Africa and makes a commendable contribution to its local community through the Khanyisela Education Project and the Royal Drakensberg Primary School , which it established.

Add to this the fact that it is a third- generation family-owned resort, which has also received numerous tourism accolades and you’ve got a recipe for success.

The end of the road is truncated by soaring mountains and tucked into the lee of steep wooded slopes, perfectly blended in with its surrounds, nests this cosy, both family friendly and boutique-like hotel.

A warm welcome, comfortable accommodation, fabulous meals and teas and a plethora of outdoor activities await. An impressive wine cellar, a cosy pub, excellent children’s facilities and a spa perfectly positioned in a beautiful forest are just some of the other draw-cards. Unpretentious, its allure is contagious.

High on the list of appeal factors has to be the resort’s unsurpassed position, which in turn affords some of the very best hiking in the area.

Whether it’s just a gentle stroll or a more strenuous full morning hike with a guide, just as you think you can’t be whipping out your camera again, you crest another trail or pass and are stopped dead in your tracks by a vista that gives real meaning to the word ‘majestic’.

Listening to the sound of gurgling rivers, the wind in the trees, the abundant birdsong, or just the silence, dwarfed by such engaging surrounds, you need to pinch yourself to check it’s real.

But real it is. It’s food for the soul. And once you’ve experienced the “Fern Forest”, “Sugarloaf” , the “Camel’s Hump” or any of the other hikes and view points, all wrapped up in warm hospitality and a great all round resort, you too will understand how they coined the phrase “The Resort of Many Happy Returns” - it’s highly addictive.
