IT is easy to fall in love with the Dutch capital, with its pretty gabled buildings, network of canals, superb museums, thriving cafe culture and genial nightlife. And on warm days Amsterdammers take to their parks, gardens, squares and canals in a celebration of all things good.

Amsterdam is blessed with an incredible art legacy. The famous Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museums are veritable treasure troves and the city is made for rambling. A wander through the centre and the famous red-light district gives a real feel for old Amsterdam.

The Dam Square with its magnificent Royal Palace is a great place to start, and then nearby is Begijnhof, complete with a wooden house dating back to 1528.

The Vondelpark is a marvellous place to stroll. It’s an English style garden with lawns, ponds and rolling footpaths and has an open-air party atmosphere on sunny days. A myriad of tourists, skateboarders, cyclists and pram pushers enjoy this iconic landmark.

Bicycles are a way of life in this flat, cycle-friendly city and boating, in this city that has been reclaimed from the sea, is also a popular and pleasant way to explore. Brown cafes, named because of their wood panelling and stained by centuries of smoke are a welcome coffee stop and just ooze gezelligheid.

A visit to Amsterdam would be incomplete without a trip to Anne Frank House, an attraction that draws around a million visitors each year. Markets abound, the air filled with the aromas of wonderful Dutch street food and colour provided by the abundance of beautiful flowers and bulbs on offer.

Served by one of the top airports in Europe, with some really affordable flights available to South Africans, and in close proximity to many other European destinations, a trip to Amsterdam is easily combined with other European cities.

And the network of trains and trams makes it a breeze to move between countries or quaint Dutch villages. So whether it’s an avid interest in the rich history of this city, or lacing up your shoes that takes your fancy, there is something for everyone in this convivial city.
