THE Riva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation requested Turning Point Amanzimtoti to provide emotional and moral support and counselling to the family of the late Anna Pillay.

A victim of domestic violence, Anna was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, Tyronne Pillay at her workplace on 29 November 2016.

Tyronne drove to Anna’s work, shot her five times and then drove off. Her murder was captured on CCTV camera. Tyronne had initially pleaded guilty, but has and now changed his plea to not guilty.

“This is yet another statistic of death by domestic violence. South Africa has the highest statistics for violence against women in the world, for a country not at war, this according to Masimanyane CEDAW Working Group NGO, Shadow Report to CEDAW: South Africa: Violence against Women (1998),” said Lorainne Odendaal, Turning Point Amanzimtoti centre manager.

“One in every four women in South Africa is regularly battered by her husband, partner or boyfriend. The Department of Justice also estimates that one out of every four women in South Africa is a survivor of domestic violence. About 41% of female homicides are perpetrated by the woman’s spouse or partner,” she added.

“These figures indicate that just under half of all the women killed in South Africa lose their lives at the hands of men whom they know, and who supposedly love as published by Dawn Blaser, Statistics on Violence against Women in South Africa and Internationally NICRO Women’s Support Centre (1998),” said Odendaal.

Victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact Turning Point Amanzimtoti to provide care and support on 031 903 7777.
