Artists come out in large numbers to hear Mthethwa

2015-10-29 06:00

Gugulethu KTC Hall was packed to capacity when Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa visited on Friday.

Mthethwa told the packed hall.

“I am honoured to listen to each and every one of you as a group or a single artist about the challenges you are facing in arts and culture,” he said.

Many of those who spoke asked for better platforms, like their own theatres.

Thami Mbongo (35) told the minister they’re suffering in the Western Cape when it comes to showcasing their talent.

“The former minister promised a theatre would be built but nothing ever happened. There is a lot of crime in Gugulethu because there are no facilities to keep us busy,” Thami said.

Rapper Siphe Ncitaale (29) said he has been playing music for a long time but whenever there are functions in Cape Town local artists are not considered.

Mthethwa said: “I’ve said the last time I was here that you must form a forum to take your grievances to the department. I am going to look into these matters and other concerns that my department is not responsible for. I will convey them to the relevant departments,” said Mthethwa.
