Community based organisations in Samora Machel are claiming that crime has escalated since police officers based at the local satellite police station were ordered to report at Nyanga police station.

Sanco, Philippi Development Forum, Philippi Business Forum, the Community Policing Forum and other community based organisations held a press conference where they claimed that there was now a “high rate of crime and robberies taking place in our community after the police station was closed without consultation”

Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi, corporate communication at Nyanga police station, dismissed allegations that the satellite police station was closed.

“The SAPS Nyanga management would like to clear out rumours spreading in the area of Samora Machel that the Samora Machel Contact Point is closed.

The Contact Point was never closed, it still operates 24 hours a day serving the community of Samora Machel.

The only change that has been made for command and control purpose started from 01 June 2015, all members report for duty at SAPS Nyanga not at the contact point anymore.

They are then deployed to the six sectors of Nyanga Policing Precinct from Nyanga police station,” Sitshitshi said.

She also said community members can and are still opening cases, enquiries and certification of documents.

Since the beginning of this process there has never been any complaint lodged by a community member concerning service delivery.

“Operations are conducted in the sector and as a result for the past weeks the crime in that area has decreased, this includes robberies, contact, trio and property crimes,” Sitshitshi added.

Xolani Joja, chairperson for Sanco in greater Philippi, said one police officer left in the satellite police station only help those who want to certify documents.

“People have to travel to Nyanga to open cases. People are robbed on broad-day light when walking on the streets. Crime has risen here now,” Joja said.

Mbaliswana Mzondi, secretary for PDF, said there is only one police van that is servicing Samora Machel, Kosovo, Heinz Park, Leads and Sweet Home.

“We have received a number of complaints from businesses about the high rate of crime since two weeks ago. People are living in fear now because they are getting robbed every day.

We want the police to be brought back here and the vans must also be brought back, because there is no longer police visibility here. Criminals are enjoying the absence of the police,” Mzondi said.

Vusumzi Xhamela, chairperson for PBF in greater Philippi, said the high rise of crime “is badly affecting businesses” and that the police must be visible in the area.

Three businesses are said to have been robbed in the past two weeks in the area, which include Spar.

Sitshitshi confirmed that a case for business robbery was opened and the police were investigation the robbery of Spar supermarket.

Mzondi also said promise for building a police station in the area, which was made in 2007, needs to be fulfilled.

Sitshitshi said the building of the police station was approved, but she did not give an indication as to when will the first brick for it be laid
