Sunday was International Mothers Day and many celebrated their mothers, living or dead, in various ways, what with cakes and other treats or goodies. Even the causal outing to the nearest eatery would have been welcome.

But for four siblings from Gugulethu, honouring a parent has been taken a step further.

They have decided to honour their late mother and father by forming a funeral services company and naming it after them

William and Flora Funeral Services is the brainchild of siblings Mbulelo and Zola Komani, known as ‘Tasman’ and ‘Qoksi’ respectively, including their sisters Daphney and Dali Komani.

William and Flora Komani died in 1991 and 2001, respectively.

“We felt that this is the best and biggest way we could honour our late parents,” said Qoksi.

Tasman is a former deputy principal at Luhlaza High School, in Khayelitsha, which made headlines in the past as one of the few township school to produce good matric results in the province.

Qoksi had been in the funeral services for more than two decades.

“We felt like we needed to honour and value the role that they(parents) have played in our upbringing. This is why we felt that we should run a company that will serve the impoverished, under privileged community of the Western Cape and beyond,” He explained.

He said that the company would achieve this through offering quality service at affordable prices.

Qoksi is well placed to utter these words, a she has been involved for 25 years in the funeral industry.

He has had a long career working for Goodall and Williams, now known as Doves Funeral Directors before leaving to start the family business with his brothers and sisters in 2014.

“Having worked in the industry that long, you get to learn all the good and the shortcomings of funeral service companies.

It is with this mind that we decided that our company should do things differently because funerals are a sensitive matter.

It important that the funeral directors to do the right thing,” he said.

Zola said there were many offerings that set William and Flora Funeral Services apart, one of which was that they are one of the few, ‘if not the only,’ funeral service in the township that have expertise in cremation.

“I know it’s a touchy subject for our people but if there is a need for it we are willing to assist. We also realised that often families have problems with funeral directors that fail to deliver what is requested by the family.

Our goal is to always make sure that the customers get what they need as there really is no room for disappointment for families who are already in mourning,” he said.
