Flooding reduced in kasis

The Urbanisation Department of the City’s Human Settlements Directorate has worked tirelessly to put in place measures to reduce flooding, especially during the winter months, in low-lying informal settlement areas. These interventions include the creation of hardened gravel platforms and rolling out the City’s re-blocking programme in areas where this is possible.

With the help of residents and our non-governmental partners, the City plans to increase these interventions in the coming months.

‘The innovative flood mitigation measures that we have rolled out in a number of informal settlements have improved the living conditions of our more vulnerable residents by, for instance, creating gravel-hardened platforms to which residents can relocate from low-lying flood-affected areas. These interventions are already yielding results with less extreme flooding being experienced in these areas.

‘While this intervention is not possible in all informal settlements, it is encouraging that the department is aiming to roll it out in as many settlements as possible. Success has already been achieved in informal settlements such as Green Park and Los Angeles
