“Thobs my laaitie verstaan hierso”!

Those were the first shots of words a friend would utter to me in his lessons on life.

Afterwards I would have had to endure an hour barrage of education from said friend.

He began by saying people were fooled into believing that when power was handed over to the masses, it was going to be with no strings attached.

“You see, the oppressors did their calculations as no one in their rightful mind could just handover power that easily or willy nilly.

There must have been a hidden agenda. I would interject; but we were out at every street corner and across the borders, trying to force the regime to crumble and I reckon we achieved that.

“Yes it is true as that was the only way or option available to us,”he would retort.

Our struggle was for total emancipation of the people.

By total, meaning that all the injustices and unequal opportunities were to be addressed.

The wealth of the country was to be shared by those who live in it.

“People need to know their rights and what is due to them.

During a breather, I’d object and say that its what Tata Mandela and the honourable leadership negotiated for.

We are now able to go the beaches. Travel in first class. Stay in previously lily white suburbs.

“Eish Thobs, you disappoint me,” came the reply.

“Those are just non-issues,”

Take a look at our education system. Nothing has changed from the previous regime and only now it is being made more damaging to our kids and more difficult to acquire or access.

If you do not have money or stay in the affluent suburbs, your child will never attend the best schools available. This whole thing is turning parents into liars about their residential abodes.

To keep our kids away, they are right now formulating a law that criminalizes parents who lie about their correct addresses.

I do not know what is to follow. I would nod, trying to figure out how I was going to put this to writing.

When our government took over nothing new in education changed for the better, apart from the dumbing down of our kids.

Education was not overhauled, and it is frustrating everyone involved, including the teachers, thus creating a generation of an undereducated majority
