Seldom do the elderly of Gugulethu find the time and, to be exact, the space to mingle with young revellers at the popular chisanyama called 50 on Gugs. In fact, it is never heard of for them to even set foot there.

With this in mind, the owners of the business decided to bring the oldies to the place, and entertained them with meat and soft drinks, for dear life.

Not for the first time that couple Sindile and Thandiso Kama have extended the invitation to the Gogos.

For the past five years, the two have seen to the cullinary needs of the grannies and madalas, the latter having gate-crashed the event as no invitation was extended to them.

That was not going to dampen the spirit of giving though, as all were served a mouth-watering three course dish.

DJ Zwai spinned the discs to the delight of all present..

Sindile Kama said the annual event is set to show the senior citizens that they are loved.

“We trade here(in this area), so we want to thank the residents who allowed us to do business here. We want to show the grannies that we love them, because some of them no longer get appreciated in their homes. The event is for grannies, but some granddads also tell us that they want to be part of it and we welcome them every year. We would have preffered to have hosted them during Women’s Month in August, but for some other commitments, could not extend the ivite then.”

It is always a touching experience, because to us it may be just a lunch offering, but to them it is more than that,” Kama said.

The Kama couple said they intend inviting grannies from other areas such as Nyanga, Philippi and Khayelitsha.

They said they are also planning to invite a popular gospel artist to next year’s event.

Granny Sindiswa Piet, 63, said she felt very happy.

“This shows care and Ubuntu. This is a very special kind of love that we do not normally get. This was my first time, and, God willing, I will definitely come back next year”

Flora Mgemane, 72, said she really enjoyed the lunch.

“I am very happy. I enjoyed every moment. We as elders are not taken care of most of the time so something like this means a lot to us. I hope God will keep me so I will come back next year,” Mgemane said
