Organisers of the Langa Open Streets event are optimistic that the second instalment will be as successful as the first.

Set for November 8 , Sivukile Sonele spokesperson Vusi Mandindi, believes that the Langa community will rise to any challenge when it is listened to and treated with respect.

“The recent protest and misunderstanding around the new housing development is not unique to Langa, and stems from perceived corrupt processes and poor communication.”

Mandidi added that the protests were about grievances, and not being listened to.

“Now that our concerns are being addressed, we are working hard to ensure that the situation returns to normal.

The organisers, Sivukile Sonele, in keeping with its mandate to ensure all people in Langa access opportunities fairly, looks forward to working with the Langa Community in delivering the second successful Open Streets.

The event will take the form of a Social Innovation Festival, in partnership with Red Bull’s Amaphiko.

Open Streets is a worldwide movement of citizens who are reclaiming their streets as a public space.

During an ‘Open Streets Day’, a street or section of a street is closed off to motorised transport, to create a temporary network of non-motorised areas and routes throughout the area.

Rather than being an event, Open Streets is simply a day to reimage public life and use our streets differently.

Open Streets Cape Town is a non-profit organisation, working to create shared spaces that embody respect for everyone and help bridge the spatial and social divides of our city.

Red Bull Amaphiko is a programme to support social entrepreneurs who are using their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit to make a difference in their communities.

Red Bull Amaphiko also aims to inspire a broader audience of young people to do the same. By taking part in this Social Innovation Festival, everyone will help promote stronger communities, healthier citizens, sustainable transport, an improved quality of life, economic opportunity and healthy recreation.

Open Streets Days are fun and a great way of enjoying the city, meeting interesting people and exploring new experiences.

The Social Innovation Festival brings together those ingredients with an extra dose of inspiring ideas from young South African entrepreneurs. Sunday November 8 will again bring together skaters, cyclists, walkers, joggers, kids, adults, artists, musicians and others to enjoy car-free space together.
