Kyokushin Guguletu club did wonders during the Western Province Karate tournament, which was held at Swartklip Hall, in Mitchells Plain recently.

of the five members of the club who took part in the tournament, three of them managed to make it to the finals.

Xoli Khoza, the youngest fighter, fought hard and won the second spot.

Khoza fought in the under Seven years category.

“He is a hard working Karate-ka and well disciplined,” Sensei Stanley Chapunza said.

Two other fighters, Stanley Chapunza junior and Tshiamo Shikwambama, fought in the under Nine category but unfortunately they lost in the first round.

Tshiamo did well because it was his first time in the ring.

The fourth fighter is the former under 10 year’s Western Province champion, Sasha, who fought four fights and tackled the first position for the 5th time.

“She is no doubt the best fighter in the Western Cape,” Chapunza, also known as Maputi, who is also the founder member the club, was crowned as the unstoppable Western Cape lightweight champion for the fourth consecutive year.

Chapunza has been selected to fight at the World Karate tournament in Germany on October 24.

“Our club is doing well though we lack sponsorship and support from the local communities.

We need more members from five years old to 100 years old both female and males,” he added.

The club trains at Ikwezi Hall at the back of the Guguletu Mall along NY2 road.

Chapunza thanked Dr Misri Khan for his support. The club is preparing for a national tournament on September 12, at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) Bellville campus.

Chapunza also teach fighting class in Green Point every Saturday at the All-Japan Kyokushin HQ under Shihan Bas Van Stenis 7th Dan Black Belt.

Training takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

They also have clubs in Phillipi and Langa. For more information please contact Chapunza, third Dan Black Belt, on 0726725895 or email him to maputichapunza@gmail.com
