Never be caught with your pants down.

Are you a good listener? I always hear people say, “Listen good.”

Actually, it was my professor who said we should open our eyes and ears. He knew why he said that. Lots of folks say things.

And sometimes we do not pay attention. But why? I don’t know. Maybe we’ve got things in our minds. Maybe things don’t go well with us. So we don’t hear what others say. Or, don’t see what they do.

Pay attention. Listen. You bet. But this time I did. I was in a taxi.

And there was this guy talking to a young woman. I wouldn’t say he was pompous. No, I wouldn’t say that. I would say he was half-baked.

That sounds harsh I know. But sometimes what people say makes you say things about them. There is no other way of describing him. He was half-baked. I wished he could say more, but he got out first.

“After the robots,” he told the driver. And his companion followed. I wanted to see how he looked like. He was seated behind me. He had a big head and a goatee beard. Spurious intellectual, I presumed.

He talked politics. SA politics. And no one challenged him. Although I wish they did. He said after Mandela was released from prison, the first thing he did was to go to England to see the Queen.

He said it was the Queen that gave us freedom. Without her we would not be free. Lusaka was not mentioned. This is the first place Mandela went to after his release. He went to see his comrades!

There he was made vice-president of the ANC. Before that Oliver Tambo had no deputy. He said it was Ramaphosa that made Mandela to negotiate with the Boers. And to crown it all, he said Mandela was involved in Hani’s death.

The girl said she thought it was Mbeki. I missed his answer. It was weird. I thought I was dreaming. But it was real. This guy was saying things. And we were all quiet. Like me maybe they were listening.

Or, they were intimidated. I don’t know. What I know is that we should be aware. There are people out there out to misinform. No one is going to catch me with my pants down. I read a lot.

Right now I am reading a book by Vusi Pikoli. It is called ‘My Second Initiation.’ Why am I doing that? I am doing that because I want to know. No one is going to tell me but books. If I want to know, I’ve got to read.

What about you? What are you reading? Are you reading anything? If not, why not?

Why are you not reading? You’ve got to read if you want to stay informed. If not they are going to catch you with your pants down. Stay positive
