Runners come out blazing

Hundreds of road runners braved the chilly and wet weather on June 16 and completed the annual Dave Spence Memorial 10km race.

The event is hosted by the RCS Gugs AC and has been taking place for the last six years.

“The weather conditions according to non-athletes was more conducive to stay in bed as it was cold and very stormy but nothing would stand in the way of these athletes,” said club chairman Thobile Ndzube.

The race started on time with every runner keen to conquer our new route which now encompasses Montana and finishes at Ny49 Stadium.

As expected it was a close finish in the end with Mthandazo Qhina taking men’s event and Tanith Maxwell taking the ladies event.

“Everyone enjoyed the course. We hope to see them in si x months’ time in our Reconciliation Day Race whereby we will be celebrating 15 years of the race,” he said.

Another club official, Dr Lizo Bango, has urged people from the townships to support these racews.

“This an investment towards their health and wellness. It, often, takes one such event to be inspired to pursue a healthier lifestyle,” he said
