Semi-shocking film to be shown at Gugas

The “Of Good Report” crew will be embarking on a “Kasi Tour” in the Western Cape this women’s month, with an aim to showcase their “Unbanned” film.

The film was banned last year at the Durban Film Festival before its screening, something that caused a huge uproar amongst filmmakers.

However, it has since been unbanned and viewer discretion is advised, and no under 16 years olds may view the film.

It is shot in Somerset East, a small town outside East London.

“Of Good Report” is about an introverted High School teacher who, after serving in the SADF finds himself teaching English at a rural school where he becomes involved with an underage pupil, Nolitha (Petronella Tshuma).

It’s a relationship that leads him on the road to obsession with tragic results.

Although the film has some nudity and violent scenes, it is not a shocker for the sake of shocking.

Rather it’s one of the most intriguing, surprising and intelligent pieces of cinema to come out of South Africa in decades.

“Of Good Report” shines a ray of hopeful light for filmmakers who feel trapped by the belief that the only way to make films is to conform to the standards and interference of those who hold the purse strings.

It is also a reminder that the best people to decide what we should be allowed to see are ourselves.

Shot in black and white, with excellent performances from its two leads, this is a film that continually surprises and surpasses expectations.

New Brighton Pictures in collaboration with BoIvy Productions brings to you the opportunity to come watch the film in “Bioscope” style at “The Dome” in Guga Sthebe, Washington Street, Langa.

The aim is both educational and entertainment, with the first viewing taking place on the 28 August 2015 at 19h00, then 29 August 2015 at 20h30 and a finale on Sunday, 30 August 2015 at 19h00. Tickets can be bought at Computicket (Shoprite) and cost R40 each
