THE Western Cape Education Department hosted the annual provincial final of the Spelling Bee on Saturday.

Thirty-nine pupils took part, including 15 Growsmart Spelling Bee finalists and 24 finalists from the district competitions, made up of the top three from each of the eight districts.

All schools were invited to take part and each school selected a team of three pupils taken from grades 4 to 6 to represent their school.

The pupils competed against each other before an audience over a couple of months.

They had to spell words from the Oxford Concise Dictionary and could ask for a definition and for the words to be used in a sentence.

Education MEC Debbie Schafer said: “I am pleased to announce the Western Cape’s most skilful spellers are Erin Sloan from Greenfield Girls Primary School in the first place, Trace-lee Cloete from Dennegeur Primary School in second place and Onwa Khonzani from St Mary’s Primary School third. “These three outstanding spellers will now represent the Western Cape at the National Spelling Bee in Pretoria on 10 October. The standard was very high. So these three can be very proud. I wish them all the very best of luck at the finals.” The MEC said she knows they will make the province proud
