Stokvel society members were treated to a special day by giant food retailer Makro at their main office in Ottery on Saturday.

About 150 stokvel clubs were invited to a braai day where they were informed of the discounts available to stokvels that performed best in terms of their buying power this year.

This year will see three clubs winning the big prize as opposed to only one, a cow, which was won by Masimanyane Club from KTC, last year.

The overall winners will receive an Ox, while the first runners-up will get three live sheep and the third prize will be two live sheep.

The winners will be announced on December 16.

The stokvels were from Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, KTC, Nyanga, and Philippi.

Munier Solomon, Marketing Manager for Makro Ottery, said this was a way of thanking the stokvels clubs for their massive contribution to the business and also to motivate them.

“These customers are loyal to us, so we reward them for being loyal. The stokvel industry has grown over the years. Everyone (business) is competing for the pie,” Solomon said.

Last year, the shop made about R6.5 million through the stokvels and this year they are already counting about R10 million.

Solomon said the stokvels started planning for their savings as early as March and that they will be reaping rewards from that investment from next month.

Makro has about 250 stokvel societies that purchase from the shop.

Linda Marawu, of Iziko Lesizwe, based in Gugulethu, praised the stokvels for saving them a lot of money.

“If you buy in bulk, you get discount. Food is expensive these days. This is going to help us at the end of the year. I am hoping that we will be lucky enough to win one of the prizes,” Marawa said.

A 34 year old woman, who asked her name not to be printed, from Siyazama Club, in Site C, said they started the stokvel in 2010 and that it has shown good results ever since.

“We last bought grocery in November and it has lasted us up to now. We are optimistic that we will win the big prize, because we are the biggest stokvel here,” she said.

Nomyeni Mengo, of Masizakhe club from Nyanga, said her club was formed in 1998 and it has 25 members.

“We are saving a lot of money through the discounts which you cannot get when you buy as an individual. We are really benefiting from it. We are going to come and buy our grocery on the second week of December,” Mengo said.
