The Steval Pumas will be looking to claim the elusive Vodacom Cup title when they face the 2012 champions DHL Western Province in Cape Town on Saturday.

After 11 weeks of gruelling rugby covering 62 matches between 15 provincial teams and the Welwitchias from Namibia, a new Vodacom Cup champion will be crowned over the weekend.

The Mpumalanga side was thwarted in their efforts when they hosted the Xerox Golden Lions in the 2013 final and will be looking to beat the coastal giants on their home turf to win their maiden Vodacom Cup title.

This will only be the second time the unbeaten Western Province will feature in the Cup final and they will be looking to continue their record in the season decider.

In 2012 Western Province upset GWK Griquas in Kimberley when Rohan Kitshoff scored a converted try at the death for a narrow 20-18 victory.

The Pumas have been the giant slayer of late beating the Lions (2013 tittle winners) and the 2014 champions, Griquas on their way to the final with the 2012 winners lying in wait.

Although the Pumas brought the Xerox Golden Lions’ unbeaten run to an end in last weekend’s semi-final, they will face a Province side that overcame the Vodacom Blue Bulls in their semi to keep their record intact.

Vodacom Cup history indicates that the luck of the draw favoured the home side as 13 out of the 17 finals were won by the hosts.

The Vodacom Cup has been the breeding ground of the country’s future rugby talent with past talent featuring permanently in Vodacom SupeRugby and for the Springboks.

The competition has seen young players make their first steps in senior rugby before moving on to greater things
