LETTER: As our soccer has lost its shine, we need to ask hard questions

2016-11-24 06:01

I don’t know whether we can say South African soccer has improved or not.

During the National Soccer League time, former Kaizer Chiefs coach, Jeff Butler once said: “I’m not worried about the administration which is not looking at soccer at grassroots, but I am more concerned about building big stadiums which will stay empty.”

And for that statement he was fined R10 000 and threaten with expulsion from the league. His answer was: “I will never pay and if I have to lose my job because of my belief, then so be it.”

I think Butler had a point because our standard of soccer has deteriorated. We should ask ourselves: what went wrong with our soccer.

Only two teams seem to pack the stadium to the rafters, and that is Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. The 70’s and 80’s were the golden era.
