Nyanga police have warned residents in the Cossovo and The Leagues that criminals have developed a new method of conducting house robberies in the area.

According to Saps spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi the culprits come into houses asking for water while their intentions are to rob occupants of their belongings.

“So far two incidents have occurred in these areas, and the suspects are either Black or Coloured males.

In one incident, an male claimed to know the family and asked for a glass of water and after being assisted, drew a knife.

He then robbed the woman of her cellphone and cash, whereas in The Leagues a Coloured male asked for water to pour into his vehicle, and after he was assisted, one of them drew a knife and robbed the occupants of money and a cel phone,” Sitshitshi explained.

She added that in another robbery in The Leagues a Coloured man pointed the occupants with a firearm and robbed them off a TV and a cellphone. The suspect was with two other Black men and another Coloured man who were sitting in a vehicle.

“We urge people to always keep their belongings hidden and safety gates closed at all times. Also teach children not to open doors for strangers and be sure when someone knocks on your door it is someone you know. House robberies occur anytime of the day,” she warned.

.In neighbouring Heinz Park, a 45-year-old man was arrested for operating an unlawful gambling establishment.

This was after police and members of the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board conducted a search in his tuck shop and confiscated five illegal sets of gambling machines and cash. The suspect was set to appear at the Philippi Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 22 March for contravening the Western Cape Gambling Act.
