Township shebeen patrons are taking part in football games over the weekends!

The events are organised by Khayelitsha’s Grassroots and Social League. It hosts a six-a-side tournament at Football for Hope in Harare, Khayelitsha every weekend. The 14 participating teams consist of patrons from Philippi East and Khayelitsha sections like Kuyasa, Makhaza, Enkanini, site B and site C, as well as other Khayelitsha and Philippi shebeens.

Co-ordinator Jones Mkentane said they started the initiative in 2010 as part of the Soccer World Cup activities and it played a big role in promoting sport at kasi boozing outlets. “We were encouraged after Safa restricted the ages of players to 25. Older players who feel sidelined get accommodated here. We use this to express our passion for sport, keep fit and protect ourselves from liquor-related illnesses. “On Sundays we get members active, offering them little time to booze on the day. It also saves them cash!” Mkentane said their association also involved teams from Burundi, Ghana and Zimbabwe. He said they close seasons by awarding the top team with a trophy as well as 15 gold and silver medals for each team. There’s also a kit prize for the social needs tournament’s top team. He appealed for support from the government and private businesses. Sipho Sidumo from Legends Football Club said he played the beautiful game to be a role model to his kids. Mzwakhe Flathela (45) said: “It’s good to stay fit and we’re all about that, not just bingeing.”
