Capture of GDF will benefit few

2016-09-08 06:00

This is an appeal to the people of Gugulethu to take part in the election of a committee that will help guide the Gugulethu Development Forum (GDF).

The Gugulethu Development Forum was formed in 2007 with the aim of speeding up development in Gugulethu.

However, it become a forum to advance the political aspirations of some members instead.

It was disbanded in 2013 due to lack of competent leadership. Then an interim structure was established in order to lead during the vacuum until an AGM, which was supposed to sit today(8th September 2016).

Many articles have been written, names have been mentioned regarding the shenanigans at this organisation. Even a member of parliament has expressed concern regarding these shortcomings.

Nevertheless, the biggest concern here is whether people want growth for Gugulethu or they want to be led by individuals driven by political ambitions. During many meetings, it has been expressed that development cannot exist apart from politics, but the question is whether politicians and development go hand in hand. For, any politician’s main focus is self-development. Many see the Gugulethu Development Forum as a stepping stone towards a lucrative parliamentary career, and not the development of Gugulethu. So, we need to be careful who we elect to the GDF. Suddenly, all manner of opportunists, who are not even involved in any development sector or organization within Gugulethu, are clamouring to be elected.
