Nomzamo Senior Club in Langa is calling on all aged citizens in the area to join the organisation in order to benefit from the daily services on offer.

Raymond Bokako, a coordinator at the club, has appealed to the local gogos and madalas to avail themselves.

Based at Ekhaya Labantu Centre, Johnson Ngwevela Street in Zone 16, the centre currently has about 37 seniors who are members, a number far less than the entire aged population in the vicinity.

Some of the services on offer include health screening, High blood pressure, diabetics, weight control, manicure and pedicure, eye testing, nutrition and transport to and from home.

The seniors also participate in choral competitions against other senior clubs and they have also been taken out on tour to places like Robben Island.

They also do sewing, beading and craft work.

Nomzamo is one of 19 clubs around the city, which operate under the auspices of Ikamva Labantu Senior Clubs.

Bokako said the centre keeps the elders entertained instead of sitting idle at home, eventually suffering from sedentary diseases. Some also escape the torment of abuse at home. The worst is for them to be left alone while everybody else is away at work.

“We ensure that they take their chronic medication treatment and also teach them about healthy eating habits. We are encouraging active ageing. We also help those who need wheelchairs. We are appealing to other elders to come and join us, because there are many benefits that they will get here,” Bokako said.

According to him, they have had the fortune of using the skills of three care givers who help with cooking, cleaning and other needs until the end of the month, courtesy of the City of Cape Town.

Phumla Ndaba, Senior Coordinator at Ikamva Labantu, said the programmes in the centre are aimed at benefiting the elders.

“They are safer here than to staying alone at their homes during the day. They are taught about their rights so they will be able to identify abuse. We ensure that they get their pensions as it is their right and many other things they need,” Ndaba said.

Florence Mabece, 86, one of the club members applauded the centre for their services.

“It is nice here. We exercise and do beads. I love music a lot and we get to sing our songs. We were taken on a tour to Robben Island in February and we were the cell of former inmate and late state president Mandela. We love the club,” Mabece said.
