Apostolic Amen Church in Zion in Gugulethu invited 100 children from disadvantaged background to a lunch at the local swimming pool. It was a beautiful day and the warm weather beckoned as the tiny tots frolicked in the warm waters , singing, dancing and clapping to blaring music.

The lunch was organised by Reverend Zamuxolo Mfihlo, and the children came from as far as Luyoloville, Masonwabe, Gxagxa and New Rest.

The day started with swimming activities and it was only later that they were treated to the special lunch.

Mfihlo said this was the second year running that his church had organised lunch for the children, and about 20 children attended.

“My congregation normally organises a Christmas party for me, but then I decided that they should rather extend it to include children.

“It was then decided to organise one for the children from the community in which we serve.

Some of the children do not have Christmas clothes, so this is a way of making them feel happy during this time of the year.

“It is a blessing to me to know that I did something good for the children,” Mfihlo said.

He also said he is planning to approach some clothing shops to get a clothing donation for the children and also approach some government departments, next year.

For this, Mfihlo has partnered with Bosasa, a youth development centre, and the Department of Justice and Correctional Services.

Zukiswa Sika, from Bosasa said their participation was as a result of a letter they received from Mfihlo about his plans for the children in his area.

“We decided to honour the correspondence by making contributions of food, as part of our outreach programme.

Khanyisile Apolis, 10, said the day was great for them.

“I am so happy to be here. I am enjoying everything. He (Mfihlo) once took us to Muizenberg, which was a nice for us,” Apolis said.
