Operations at Iqhayiya Secondary School came to a standstill last week and lessons were disrupted for three days as Congress of South African Students(Cosas) embarked on protest action.

At the centre of their grievances were that the organisation does not enjoy recognition from the school authorities and that corporal punishment was still being used to discipline learners. Cosas provincial chairperson, Michael Mayala, confirmed that the protest was informed by Cosas non-recognition at the school and corporal punishment being meted out to learners.

“ The school principal, Ayanda Mbova, encourages corporal punishment at the school. She runs the school as dictatorship. We are not going to stop protesting, we are going forward until our grievances are addressed,” Mayala said.
