My heart went all out for this kid who told me a painful story.

I have discovered that kids don’t want to talk. They don’t like to talk. I call him a kid although he is in his 20’s amd a school leaver.

Last year he completed his Grade 12, and since then he has been home bound, doing what only God knows- maybe watching TV.

Isn’t that what we do when we are unemployed and not studying.

You think you are doing something, when all you do is watching television. But is watching TV doing something? Not so long ago I asked someone after Leicester seemed to achieve the unachievable.

I seemed to catch him off balance. He asked what was my question. I repeated it.

And he said he did not know, since he was watching television. My point is; people watch TV but they do not watch it.

They are far away. Likewise, I bet that its the sane with that kid. I bet many school leavers do that. When they have nothing to do, they watch TV.

But they are not there. They are far away. And what does that do to them?

It is destroying them. You know, as I talked to him, some things were revealed to me. Our kids don’t aim high. They aim low. I was shocked to hear his story. Since leaving school, he has been rejected twice.

Turned down from one job after the other.

So he has stopped looking for a job. And you’d think it is a high job. No, it is a low one - some packaging at a supermarket. This kid is living with his mother and grandmother. He has an absent father.

When I asked about his father, you could see the anger on his face. I could understand. I know the story very well. We men are useless. We just want to make babies, but we do not want to look after them. We do not want to coach our kids to be champions. There is no man to tell that kid the next step after school-what to do after leaving school. I asked him whether he had a CV. It broke my heart just watching him prepare the document.

Imagine telling the prospective employer that this kid was good, only to be rejected. And rejection brings fury to the heart. I also noticed that the kid was de-motivated.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he turns to crime. Society doesn’t care.

And teachers, what do they teach these kids? I don’t know. I talked to him. I tried to plant some seeds. But it felt like I could not reach him. Stay positive.
