Dj Ozzil Waves, real name Olwethu Trom, from the Strand was announced the winner of the Viceroy Makoya Mix DJ Search 2016.

The top five finalists battled it out at Artizen Lounge in kwaMashu, Durban on Saturday.

The five finalists played under the watchful eye of a preselected panel of judges and an independent auditor checked the whole process.

DJ Ozzil Waves walked away with a career-boosting prize valued at R100 000 that included the opportunity to produce a single under the guidance of the Makoya Mix Mentors and DJ Equipment.

DJ Ozzil Waves said he is very proud to be the first ever winner from the Mother City since the competition started six years ago.

“The competition was tough and all the DJs knew the stakes were high and pushed very hard, however this was my night and I did it for the Western Cape.”

The Makoya Mix DJ Search competition has been unearthing talent for the past six years and the involvement of DJs Christos, Tira and Naked DJ as mentors has seen the standard of the competition change each year.

Marketing Manager Oupa Lehaha said he would like to see more youth coming through to take part.

“We know our country has great talent,”
