LETTER: Drug use is killing our children

2016-02-25 06:00

With all the negative influences around, parents have their work cut out for them if they are to raise responsible children.

During my teens, I was a smoker. I started smoking just to please my peers so that I could be regarded as one of the cool guys.

Nevertheless, I never felt good after smoking a cigarette. That’s why I quit after five years of addiction to nicotine.

The good news about my efforts was that I started to breathe a lot easier and I had a good appetite for food.

Everyone, young and old, is aware that drugs can harm a person and destroy them. I wonder why we still have so many new drug addicts.

We need to address this problem with our kids from when they are still at primary school.

It probably feels good when they take their first puff or sniff.

Unbeknown to them, they will soon be addicted to drugs and all their beautiful dreams will be shattered.

All they will be doing is working to satisfy their harmful habit. This is not what we would like for our children, siblings, nephews or nieces, relatives and neighbours.

So let’s all play a part in making young people aware that drugs are bad for their health and social life in general.

I often use my bad experience with cigarettes to guide the young ones. Please do your part before your own child becomes a nyaope addict.
