Education Department has its mission cut out this year

Western Cape Education’s plan this year to improve language and maths skills has four pillars.

These are people development, efficient teaching methods, monitoring and evaluation, suitable facilities and resources.

MEC Debbie Schafer said: “People development includes teacher training and support, building the self-confidence of pupils and involving parents.

“Parents have a key role to play, by encouraging children to read, write and practise maths every day. “Our programme will include tips for parents on what they can do to build their children’s language and maths skills. “Improving skills in language and maths is one of our priorities. These subjects provide the foundation for all learning. We have to start by building this in primary schools.”

“Language is key for communicating with others and to learning all subjects. By studying languages, pupils develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing that they need to take part successfully in society and employment. Through language, they develop skills to express themselves clearly. “We have introduced many new strategies to improve results in language and mathematics. Systemic tests and national senior certificate results show there is still room for improvement,” said Schafer.
