LETTER: Failed candidates should not instigate violence

2016-06-23 06:00

How disappointing it is that after 22 years of democracy, some people still do not understand how the system works.

As we approach the local government elections, some people are holding our communities to ransom.

They believe that it is only them who have the right to be on the candidates list, that communities don’t have the right to choose anyone else.

Failure to elect them results in violent protests and the destruction of property.

This is foolish because local government is all about bringing services closer to the people.

What is worse is that these are people who claim to be leaders in their communities.

These people, especially those who are ANC members, must understand that being number one on the list doesn’t mean you are automatically the face of the organisation.

In South Africa, things are very simple and if a person is not happy, he or she can stand as an independent candidate instead of convincing people to take part in violent protests.

However, my guess is that these people know that if they run as independent candidates, they will not win.

Their only hope is winning through representing a political party in that ward. This bad behaviour has to stop!
