“There needs to be a community effort to protect young girls from rapists and murderers in Khayelitsha.”

This was the call of the Khayelitsha Development Forum following the latest news of the recent murder of Iyapha Yamile,4, on Sunday.

The KDF visited her family in Town Two on Tuesday, led by Ndithini Tyhido, its chairperson, to pay condolences and offer support..

Her body was found in a plastic bag, which was allegedly dumped near her aunt’s house in the vicinity on Monday morning.

However, the victims’ parents, Sindiswa Yamile and Dan Ngongoshe were not present during the visit as they had been to see a counsellor at the time.

“It is becoming the norm for young children to be murdered like this in our neighbourhoods, in certain areas. We as the community need to come together and come with a way to protect our children.

“We have come to give you support today and we want you to know that we as an organisation are here to pledge our support to the family,” he said to Iyapha’s aunt Nomakhaza Yamile.

Tyhido said that one of the first actions was to oppose bail for the suspects until the case is finalised in court.

Police have arrested four people in connection with the her murder.

“One of the biggest challenges we face in Khayelitsha is that sometimes police struggle to find enough evidence to put culprits away.

We are going to give this case a close eye with the hope that the suspects don’t walk away free,” said Tyhido.

Nomakhaza Yamile said that the young child had been missing since Sunday when her body was found the following day(Monday).

“We are very hurt as a family but we have no option but to be strong.

...The parents are taking too much strain from this,” she said.

It is alleged that the murder of the child was conducted at a house opposite Nomakhaza’s home, which house was set alight by angry residents after the discovery of the body.

The child’s aunt said the family suspected that the child was also raped but police said they were investigating and could not confirm this allegation.

Police Spokesperson Captain Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed that four suspect had been arrested for the incident and

“Lingelethu police arrested four suspects aged between 20 and 30 years following the discovery of the body of a girl in Town Two, Khayelitsha yesterday (on Monday).”
